On paper, open-cut can look cheaper per metre. Add traffic management, reinstatement, utility risk and programme time, and the ledger usually flips. A clear-eyed comparison for project owners.
The most common question we hear from first-time trenchless clients is simple: why not just dig?
Sometimes digging is right. A short run through open desert with no services above the pipe and no traffic to manage is an open-cut job, and any honest contractor will say so. The comparison changes the moment the alignment meets a road, a utility corridor or water.
Start with the costs open-cut estimates often understate. Traffic management on a live UAE carriageway means diversion design, approvals, barriers, signage and often night working, running for the full duration of the excavation. Reinstatement means rebuilding the road structure to authority specification, with warranty liability if the trench settles, and trench settlement is the single most common defect on open-cut utility work. Every metre of open trench through a services corridor is also a metre of strike risk, and one damaged 11kV cable or fibre trunk can erase the entire cost difference in an afternoon.
HDD concentrates its cost into mobilisation and the bore itself. Per metre it can price higher on short crossings, which is why crossing length matters: the longer the crossing, the more the fixed costs dilute and the more decisively trenchless wins. Programme time compounds the advantage. A crossing that would demand six weeks of phased open-cut with lane closures is routinely drilled in days, and for a commercial client, weeks of programme are money.
Then there are the costs that never appear in a bill of quantities: businesses that stay accessible, residents not living beside an excavation, mature trees and landscaping untouched, and the authority relationships preserved by a project that never made the news.
Our advice to project owners is to compare total delivered cost including traffic, reinstatement, risk and time, not the trench-only rate. On that honest ledger, beneath any live road or waterway, the bore wins far more often than the excavator.
